In 1908, when he painted The Grand Canal, Monet was suffering from cataracts in both eyes. His paintings from this period are even more blurred than usual - notice how the solid walls of the buildings seem to flow seamlessly into the waters of the canal itself. The shadows are defined with a mix of colors, using no black.
