Edouard Manet (1832-1883) Realist
Oil on Canvas
Manet was very much a painter of the people of the 19th century Paris, the Paris of gas lit cafes and the fashionable boulevards. Manet was the older and more respected painter in the eyes of the younger impressionist artists.
In this picture we find ourselves in a restaurant with its windows and entrance opening onto a garden, perhaps a very exclusive garde restaurant located in the atrium of a fashionable hotel just off the boulevards. The garden frames a young couple who look admiringly and lovingly at each other. With great ability, Manet fixes the fleeting moment of a glimpse, a single moment intimately shared over a glass of champagne and a promised rendezvous.
