Van Dongen entered the Parisian art scene at the height of Fauvism. His was very successful and in addition to painting, he sold satirical newspaper sketches. Later, he began painting portraits of high society in his characteristic breezy, witty style. Often controversial, Van Dongen's works were considered scandalous - one was even seized by the police!
